Sample Application

Want a little help with your application? Well, here it is! Here, we will explain what we are looking for, as well as giving an example of a 'good' and 'bad' answer from a fictional character, called Fluffy. Remember though that what constitutes a good and a bad answer is entirely up to you! These are just examples to give you a few hints as to what we may expect.

1. How long have you been playing on HT? As this character? As an alt?

What we want:

This question is in place to simply understand how familiar you are with the game and its code, and whether or not your character is brand spanking new or not.

Good answer:

I first joined the game one week ago as Fluffy. Fluffy is my first character on Harper's Tale. (This explains that you have been playing on Harper's Tale for a total of one week, and that Fluffy is your first (and possibly only) character on the game).

Bad answer:

(To be honest, there is no real /bad/ answer to this question.)

2. How long have you been Mu*ing in general?

What we want:

Again, we just want to know how familiar you are with MOO code, as well as game ethics and so on. Mu*ing includes MOO, MUSH, MUX and so on, and is not limited to Pern-themed games.

Good answer:

I have been Mu*ing for two years, and have spent one year playing Pern Mu*s. (This explains that you have been playing on Pern for one year, but your total Mu* experience has been for two years.)
I am new to Mu*ing. (This explains that you are just trying out the wonderful experience that is Mu*ing. Don't worry, this isn't a problem! It just means that we're aware that we may have to teach you a few things, as you'll still be learning. We like teaching!) :D

Bad answer:

(Again, there is no really bad answer to this question.)

3. Which of the Pern books have you read?

What we want:

What your knowledge of Pern is. While we don't require that you have read every single Pern book, reading at least one or two will provide a decent amount of background information which you can call upon during play. We basically want to know that you're not going to pull out a lightsabre in the middle of a Gather scene. ;)

Good answer:

I've read all of the books in the series. (This tells us what we need to know, short and simple!)
I haven't read the books, but I've been playing on PBEMs for the past year, and I've read the help files on Harper's Tale. (This explains that while you may not be familiar with the contents of the books, you have experienced Pern before, and should therefore know the basics. Having read the help files on HT indicates that 1) you're familiar with the game's theme and 2) you're willing to learn).

Bad answer:

Pern? What's Pern? (Errr…. do we need to explain this one?) ;)
I haven't read the Pern books. (Ok, not a bad answer as such, but it doesn't tell us what your knowledge of the theme is.)

4. What OOC skills can you bring to the craft? For example, description writing, coding etc. If you do not have any that is okay.

What we want:

This is just to get a feel of what you may be comfortable doing within the Craft. Are you creative? Then you may enjoy writing descriptions for animals and other Herder paraphernalia. Can you code? Then maybe you'd like to help out in such and such an area. Like the question says, if you're just here to have fun and not participate in OOC ways, then that's fine, too.

Good answer:

I can't code, but I enjoy writing descriptions. I also like coming up with TPs (tinyplots). (This tells us exactly what we want to know - we know where you're comfortable (in creating TPs and descriptions) and where're you're not comfortable (code).)

Bad answer:

I don't know. (If you need an explanation about what descing or coding involves, then feel free to ask! Anyone will be able to help you, not just a Herder staff member. Simply replying with 'I don't know' gives us the impression that either you don't understand and weren't willing to find out, or that you're not interested.)

5. What sorts of OOC experience do you have with animals?

What we want:

To know what you know about animals, basically. Do you have a pet bunny, dog, cat, horse? Then tell us! Perhaps you're a vet? Or maybe you've never seen an animal outside of a zoo or a petting farm? It's all good!

Good answer:

I've had pet dogs since I was born, and my parents breed them so I know a little bit about raising puppies and the basic day to day care of them. (This is great, it tells us what your experience is with canines, so we know you'll be confident RPing tasks related to them.)
I don't have any pets, and the only contact I have with animals is when I visit my friend, who has a tortoise. (This is also great, as it lets us know that you're not too familiar with animals, so we may have to advise you a little in how they act, how to act around them etc.)

Bad answer:

I don't like animals. (While we're not going to hold it against you for not liking animals, we may be asking why you're interested in joining the Herder Craft! Perhaps you, the player, doesn't like animals, but your character, Fluffy, does? Try to elaborate, if this is the case).

6. What do you feel is a Herders role in Pern, and what is a Herders role on the game? What do you feel is an apprentices role? (We understand if you don't know specifically we just like to have a feel for what you know about the hall)

What we want:

As the question says, we just want to know what your understanding of a Herder's job is, ICly. You can go into as much detail as you like.

Good answer:

I think that Herders look after the animals of Pern, and help with breeding, care and other aspects. (This answer-in-a-nutshell is fine.)

Bad answer:

I don't know. (While we don't expect you to know everything and are here to help you learn more about our Craft, there are numerous sources on the game, in this wiki and on the internet which will tell you what a Herder does on Pern.)

7. What is your characters history? Relatives? Where is your character from? What sort of personality do you have? Why are you the way you are?

What we want:

To know that your character isn't a complete psychopath, is the long and short of it! ;) This is another part of the application where you can pour out your heart and soul into the answer, so that we know as much as possible about your character. Please note that the second two questions relate to you as a player, not as a character (in other words, the person doing the typing).

Good answer:

Fluffy comes from a small family in Keroon. His parents are Herders, and he has two sisters and one brother, Flopsy, Mopsy and C'tontail, who rides a blue dragon at Ista. His sisters are older than him and one is a Harper, the other is a Weaver.
Fluffy has a personality like me - he is friendly and likes animals. I like animals because I've grown up around them. (This answer is fine. It gives a concise response to what we're looking for, though elaboration is always good!)

Bad answer:

Fluffy's whole family died and he was left to be raised by a pair of wild wolves. He hated people until he saw a beautiful girl whose family took him in and treat him well, now he wants to become a herder just like they said his dad was before he died. (There are quite a few things wrong with this answer… firstly, there are no wolves on Pern. Secondly, if a child's whole family died, then they would have been taken in by whatever Hold, Hall or Weyr they lived at, and raised by them. Thirdly, we try to discourage overly-emotional histories. No, not everyone's life is all peaches and cream, so a little bit of angst is fine. Lastly, this answer doesn't include anything on personality, which the question asked for - if you would prefer not to answer, then please state so.)

8. Why do you OOCly want to become a Herder? ICly?

What we want:

It's quite obvious with this one, actually… we just want to know why you want to join us, as both a player (yourself) and as Fluffy (your character). There are no right or wrong answers. :)

9. Where do you see your character going in the craft? What plans do you have?

What we want:

Is your character going to be an excellent Herder who does so well in their classes that they're quickly promoted to be the best there is? Or are they going to be an eternal Apprentice, forever stuck doing chores and classes? Let us know! Whatever you write here isn't set in stone, so you can change it later, if you wish.

Good answer:

I want Fluffy to learn about canines, with them as his specialty once he becomes a Senior Apprentice. Eventually I want him to advance to become a Master, and then be posted at one of the Holds. (This shows us what you want to do quite nicely.)

Bad answer:

I don't know. (Again, this shows that you perhaps aren't too interested in where your character might go; if you truly don't know what you want your character to do in the Herder Craft, then something along the lines of 'I've not decided what I'm going to do with them yet,' is perfectly acceptable!)

10. At this time are you planning to apply your character for Search, or do you see it as a possibility? It is all right if you do again we'd just like an idea.

What we want:

This is just to see if you plan on sticking around in the Craft for a long while, or if you're hoping to move on to a Weyr when they hold Search, which is perfectly fine, though we'll miss you! There is no good or bad answer - maybe you want to apply, maybe you don't, or maybe you're not sure. Just be honest. :)

11. When are you usually on? Even if you don't have a regular schedule, please try to give us two or three different times, so we can try to track you down for an interview!

What we want:

Not only does this give us the chance to interview you, but we'll know when we will be able to catch you for a scene or two, or ten. :D You don't need to give us your home address (as that is entirely confidential), though it's useful for us to know what timezone you're in. You may wish to let us know if you're taking a break after you've applied, just so that we know you've not lost interest before we can get back to you.

Good answer:

I'm usually online on Saturday and Sunday, from 10am-6pm, and Monday from 7pm-10pm, in the PST timezone. (This gives us all of the information we need!)

12. Have you formally been a herder or similar type character, here or elsewhere? If so, what kind of experiences.

What we want:

By formally, we mean a character who has been an Apprentice/Journeyman/Master etc in the Herder Craft (or Beast Craft - same thing) on either Harper's Tale or another game before, not just an NPC (none player character or puppet). This is so that we know what type of experience you may have with the role, though having had one previously is not a necessity!
